At the end of February 2006 police called the owner of A & E Pettifer's, Mr Donald Reynolds, just as he was sitting down to Sunday lunch, and ordered him to attend his general store. An officer entered the shop and 'arrested' three gollies in the window and took them into custody. Police said they were acting on a complaint from a passer-by under Section 5 of the Public Order Act, which outlaws the display of offensive material, which may cause, or is likely to lead to alarm, harassment or distress. The 'arrest' attracted both local and national interest, being reported in the national press and on midlands television as well as in the local press. Mr Reynolds received tremendous support from local people and businesses and a campaign was launched to free the three gollies, now nicknamed 'The Bromyard Three'. The general feeling both locally and nationally was this was 'political correctness gone mad'.
